ABSTRACT

Innovations in Postoperative Pain Control

Patient controlled analgesia (PCA) has since its inception become one of the mainstays of post operative pain management.  We are all familiar with the modality, as well as the adverse effects of the analgesia and the problems associated with hardware required.  Recently a new innovation has been developed that may offer advantages over the traditional PCA.
I will discuss IONSYS, a method of providing Fentanyl via a patient controlled analgesia system using iontophoresis.  I will introduce the clinical trial data looking at efficacy, safety and ‘ease of care’, as well as a brief investigation of the implications of its introduction into a hospital setting.
